Just like you update your closet or home decor season after season, kitchenware and other materials need the same upgrade! Eunice Byun recommends searching for materials like stainless steel, cast iron or hardwoods to ensure years of use! But, if you don’t feel like buying a completely new kitchen just yet, follow these tips to figure out when things really need to go.

Things like silverware, dishes, mugs, knives and some cutting boards should last you a lifetime! Make sure you keep them clean and store them properly. So don’t worry about tossing those out this spring unless there are large visible cracks and signs of chipping.

If you do have plastic Tupperware, make sure to watch out when the containers start to become deformed, cracked, or discolored. This is when it’s definitely time to throw them out! If you do decide to keep them, dangerous chemicals could migrate out of the plastic and infect your food. If you want to avoid this problem, think about investing in some glass food containers. They will last you years and are less likely to house a leftover smell from food as plastic Tupperware might.

Sponges and other kitchen utensils should be thrown out as soon as there are definite signs of wear and tear. For sponges, this usually means 1 to 2 weeks, but depends on how often you use them. There is no specific time frame for cooking utensils, just make sure there are no major cracks or broken pieces. If there are, it makes them harder to clean and provides a resting ground for bacteria.

Make sure to check out your food and spices’ expiration dates. Weed out expired spices and herbs by smelling them, the ones that hardly have any scent left can be tossed! Keeping rancid food not only takes up valuable storage space but can also be harmful to your health!
